A successful day on the water is often determined by the quality of the live bait used to target a particular game fish species. Here are some elements to consider when choosing your next CAST NET.
5 Questions To Ask Before Making Your Next Cast Net Purchase:
- 1Which cast or throw net brands provide the best value for the performance and features offered?
- 2Does the manufacturer of the brand stand behind the product by offering free of defect warranties?
- 3Does the cast net have adequate weight to perform in the water depth and currents in which it will be used?
- 4Will the diameter of the cast net provide enough spread to catch adequate amounts of the targeted live bait?
- 5Does the cast net have a hand line with an appropriate length for the water depth that will be fished?
Panel Construction
Wedge Panels – Wedge panel cast or throw nets with vertical seams spread easily and are very durable.
Circular Panels – Circular panel cast or throw nets with horizontal seams are cost effective to purchase but the trade off is reduced spread performance and product longevity.
NOTE–Wedge panel vs. circular panel construction - you get what you pay for.
Mesh Material
Monofilament – Monofilament is available in several different grade qualities. High quality mono should be soft and flexible, reducing live bait damage while not compromising cast net strength and durability.
Mesh Size
The targeted baitfish should be used to determine the correct mesh grid size.
For larger baitfish such as mullet, a ½ inch to 1 inch mesh grid is recommended.
For small baitfish such as cigar minnows, a ¼ inch to 3/8 inch mesh grid is recommended.
Net Radius
Cast nets can vary in radius size but usually range from 4ft up to12ft in radius length (8ft up to 24ft in diameter). We recommend that the following factors be considered when determining the appropriate net radius:
Skill level – Longer radius nets are more difficult to throw
Throwing Area – If throwing in tight areas around docks and/or pilings, smaller radius nets (6ft or smaller) are recommended.
Regional Laws – Certain States and Regions restrict cat net radius lengths (typically to 8ft)
Lead Line Weight
If throwing a cast net in deeper water and strong currents a heavier weighted (1.5 lbs/ft) net is recommended.
When working the shallows a lighter weighted (1.2 lbs/ft) net is recommended.
Braille Lines
Cast nets constructed for maximum performance and durability should have a minimum of 30 Braille lines. The Braille lines help to create an even spread and provide the lifting strength once the net has closed over the targeted bait.
